Brionvega have just released their Alpha LCD TV, which comes complete with integral DVD player which boasts beautifully distinctive styling that manages to fuse modern design elements with a tantalising retro influence which the product site compares with the ‘decorative masterpieces of the Thirties: Le Corbusier, Breuer, Mies, Eileen Gray’.
The Alpha consists of two elements; the 19” 1280 x 1024 resolution LCD TV itself which is joined, courtesy of chrome tubular supports, to the base unit which houses the DVD player offering VCD, SVCD, DVD, CD-DA and MP3 format compatibility and which supports single and dual layer DVD, DVD-Rand DVD-RW discs.
The Brionvega Alpha also comes with a remote control and whilst hardly mind blowing from a technical perspective (this is far from HD capable, for instance) there’s no doubt that the design of the Alpha serves in its own right to distinguish this LCD DVD/TV combo from the masses of rather nondescript TV units out there – and, for that reason alone, to get overly hung-up on the somewhat lacklustre specifications would, we feel, be doing the Alpha a grave disservice.
That said, at around £1540 / €1950 a pop, perhaps the rather bland specifications may prove just a little too hard to put aside for those otherwise captivated by the Alpha’s jaw-dropping aesthetics.
